Klondike Derby 2005

Location: Camp Helendade in the San Bernardino Mountains (Running Springs)

The Klondike Derby is a winter event that features fun and scout-like
competition in the spirit of a camporee.  This year looks like it will
great weekend due to the recent snowfall in the Running Springs area.
The troop has attended the Klondike Derby twice in the last three years:
2002 at Camp Helendade and 2004 at Camp Emerson.

All meals and sleeping accommodations are provided by the camp - bring
warm winter clothes (layers) and a warm winter coat and hat.
Bring extra gloves/mittens since wet gloves do not insulate very well.
An extra sleeping hat (wool stocking cap) is also necessary
since the cabins are not usually heated.
Bring the usual 10 essentials and a warm sleeping bag (rated at 20-degrees or lower).

In past years, the camp has offered a Penguin Patch for any scouts that
slept outside in the snow in a tent.  The troop (that means us) must provide the
tent, winter-rated sleeping pads, and the scouts must show that they are
fully prepared for a safe winter camping experience.
If you are interested in the Penguin Patch, talk to Mr. Shoop or Mr. Kovell BEFORE you leave on the outing.
