Troop 671 Snow Sports Day
The March
trip (Saturday, 3/15/2003) will be an all-day (no overnight) trip to Big Bear
Lake for a special Snow Sports Day put on by Troop 87, Big Bear.
Merit Badge Counselors will be on hand for instruction, testing & sign-off of the requirements of the Snow Sports Merit Badge which can be earned by downhill ski or snowboard. (Nordic skiing is not offered on this day)
The costs are pretty reasonable, since it is a BSA group rate, and participation in the MB program is optional - so if a boy would like to go skiing, but is not ready for the MB program, you can take advantage of the lessons at Bear Mountain and just have fun. For the boys that have skied/boarded before and are ready to be tested for the Snow Sports MB, they can do that with the Troop 87 Instructors.
I have included both the official form from Troop 87 and also a form on which I have shown some options for the costs depending on age and lessons/rentals/etc.
We will need at least one other adult to go along - I am a skier and will stay with the boys all day, particularly if there is a non-merit badge group.
Neither lunch, nor dinner are included in the costs that were sent in the previous email.
Each boy should either bring a sack lunch or money for lunch at the lodge. I would estimate lunch to be about $10 and an extra $5-$7 for an on-the-road dinner at one of the fine fast-food restaurants of Hwy 18 in Big Bear Lake on the way home.
Other than quarters for a storage locker, I don't believe that there are any other necessary costs for a day-trip.
I would like to add a note on equipment rentals ... Although it may be possible to find a slightly better deal for ski or board rental "down the hill", but I would recommend that equipment be rented at the lodge. If any problems with fit or function come up, they are very easy to solve when the rental office is right there at the resort. If equipment was rented here, it may mean a spoiled day for your scout.
All of this information is also available on the troop website and will be updated as we approach the day of the trip.
If anyone has any questions about this event, please feel free to give me a call or drop me an email.
Yours in Scouting ... Rick Lovdahl – Scoutmaster, Troop 671
